Functions of Higher and Technical Education Department:

The Department of Higher and Technical Education performs oversight functions (i.e. the state of being in-charge of something) over state and privately owned Tertiary, Science/Technical and Vocational Institutions in the State. These functions include:

• Representing the Ministry in the Council and Committee meetings of the institutions (ESUT, IMT, College of Education Technical and Enugu State Polytechnic Iwollo).
• Handling cases that may arise from the institutions.
• Monitoring the institutions to ensure compliance with the regulations and National Policy on Education.
• Ensuring that the state institutions are positioned to get state government and other intervention funds to ensure full accreditation of their courses.
• Liasing with Federal Ministry of Education (FME) Higher Education Department in programmes related to Tertiary Institutions (including the National Open University. There^: is   one   State   University,   two   Polytechnics,   three Colleges of Education.
• Handling UNESCO common wealth,   British Council etc. education related issues.
• Representing the Ministry at such National Policy making bodies at the Joint Consultative Council on Education (JCCE) and National Council on Education (NCE).
• Representing the Ministry in and handling issues from the State NYSC Board (including the welfare of NYSC members).
• Planning and coordinating teachers training and development to meet the reeds of the system.
• Matters   relating   to   teacher's   Education,   professionalism, welfare etc.
• Liase with National Teachers Registration Council (TRC) on the registration of teachers.
• Monitor training  centres  (NTI, Colleges) for  Policy implementation.
• Handle issues of teachers sandwich programmes in liaison with tertiary institutions.
• Monitor practical teaching Examination by NTI.
• Participation in Evaluation teams in the Ministry for quality control/assurance.
• Make regulations and ensure compliance by private Business and Vocational Centres.  
• Oversight   functions   over   the   activities   of   Enugu   State Science,   Technical   and   Vocational   Schools   Management Board. 
• Liaise   with   Federal   Ministry   of Education   on   Technical Education and Technical Teachers Matters. 
• Regulating    and    monitoring    the    operations    of   private business/vocational/craft centres in the state. 
• Dissemination    and    collection    of   Technical,  Teachers, Training   Programme   (TTTP)   form   for   data   collection   of teachers in secondary schools/colleges in Enugu State.
