On Monday, 16th September 2024, the Honourable Commissioner for Education, Prof. Ndubueze L. Mbah, welcomed the EU-UNESCO consultant to an inception meeting at the Ministry's Conference Hall. This vital meeting was geared towards the second phase of the EU-UNESCO Teacher Capacity Development Project, which focuses on education and youth empowerment.
As one of the six states selected for this phase in Nigeria, Enugu's remarkable strides in transforming education are gaining national attention. Prof. Mbah expressed the state's readiness to embrace this opportunity, stating, "We are eager to openly share our challenges and collaborate to implement sustainable solutions." The Project focuses keenly on Basic education reform, Teacher recruitment, retention, and motivation, as well as National Teacher Education Policy Reform (NTEP) to enhance teaching outcomes.
Mrs. Paulina Pam, the EU-UNESCO Consultant, commended the exceptional commitment demonstrated by Enugu education stakeholders who turned out enmass on a public holiday to brainstorm on Enugu state strategy to realize the vision of the EU-UNESCO education project.
Rev. Father Hilary Mgbodile, Chairman Post Primary School Management Board (PPSMB) highlighted the state's previous commitment to inclusive education, while Prof. Hyginus Banko Okibe, Chairman Enugu State Universal Basic Education Board (ENSUBEB) and Comrade Onyebuchi Mba advocated for continuous teacher development and integration of sign language and braille education. The NUT Chairman, Comrade Theophilus Nweke, praised the Enugu state government for their unprecedented investment in education transformation.
The meeting reflected the strong participation of the leadership of Teachers Registration Council of Nigeria (TRCN), executive leadership of association of private schools, heads of department and agencies, ministry of education directors, consortium of civil society organizations, representatives of various religious education commissions and key stakeholders across the education sector.
